How to fax from iPhone for free - and what free really means
Can you fax from an iPhone for free? Yes, for a short fax. The easiest way is a fax app that gives you your first page free: you scan the page with the camera, type the number and send, all on your phone. Free fax websites and free online fax plans work too, with more limits and more steps. Here's how each one compares, and the "free trial" to be careful with.
Full disclosure: I make HonestFax, the first option below. The numbers about other services are the ones they publish on their own websites.
The short answer
| Free option | What you get for $0 | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Easiest on iPhone HonestFax app | Your first page, scanned with the camera and sent from your phone | One free page per device; after that you pay per fax, with no subscription |
| Free fax website | Up to 3 pages plus a cover page, to the US and Canada | Their branding on your cover page, a daily limit, and no scanner - the file has to be on your phone first |
| Free plan of an online fax service | A small page allowance, for example 10 pages in total | An account to create, and a one-time allowance, not a monthly one |

The easiest way: a free first page in HonestFax
On a phone, the hard part of faxing isn't the sending - it's getting paper into a fax-ready file. A fax app does the scanning and the sending in one place. In HonestFax, your first page is on us: new devices get one page free, so a one-page fax costs nothing.
- Install HonestFax and open the New Fax tab. There's no account to fill in and no trial to start.
- Scan your page with the camera, or attach a photo or PDF you already have.
- Type the fax number and check the destination.
- Look above the Send fax button. It shows how many pages the fax has and how many credits it uses, before anything is charged.
- Tap Send fax and watch it go from dialing to Delivered. You get a notification when it lands, and the Sent tab keeps the exact pages that were transmitted.

Why it's the easiest free option on iPhone:
- Everything happens on your phone. No computer, no printing, no converting a photo into a file a website accepts.
- The price is on screen before you scan, so you always know whether the fax is free or what it costs.
- No subscription, ever, unless you choose one. After the free page you pay per fax: up to 3 pages is $2.99, 10 pages are $4.99 and 30 pages are $9.99, and pages never expire.
- If a fax can't be delivered, the credits come back automatically. Why a fax fails explains what can go wrong.
- A cover page is built in, with your name, phone and a short message. See what to put on a fax cover sheet.
How much does it cost to send a fax compares this with stores, websites and monthly plans.
Other free options, and their limits
A free fax website in Safari
A free fax website works in Safari like it does on a computer (free fax online compares the free sites side by side): you fill in the sender and recipient, attach a file and send. FaxZero, for example, sends a free fax of up to 3 pages plus a cover page within the US and Canada, up to 5 free faxes a day, with FaxZero branding on the cover page. Its form asks for your email address and takes DOC, DOCX and PDF files.
The catch on an iPhone is the file. A website can't scan paper for you. You'd scan it first with the Files app (tap the More button, tap Scan Documents, keep each page, tap Done, then choose a location and tap Save), then pick that document in the website's upload button. How to scan documents for a fax has tips so the pages come out readable.
Watch for: the page limit (a longer fax becomes a paid fax - $3.29 for up to 25 pages on FaxZero), their branding on your cover page, and where your document goes. Read the privacy terms before you upload tax or medical forms.
The free plan of an online fax service
Online fax services usually have a free tier to try them. Fax.Plus, for example, has a free plan with 10 pages to fax in total, and its paid plans start at $6.99 a month.
Watch for: the account you have to create, the pages that don't come back each month, and a monthly plan you only needed once. If you do subscribe, set a reminder to cancel.
Watch out for "free trial" fax apps
Search the App Store for "free fax" and you'll find apps that open with a free trial. Many of them turn into a weekly subscription when the trial ends, so one fax can end up costing far more than the fax itself. Our look at FAX from iPhone shows how that works in one popular app.
If you do start a trial, Apple's advice is to cancel it at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you don't want it to renew. The steps are in how to cancel a fax app subscription on iPhone.
This is exactly why HonestFax has no trial: the first page is simply free, and nothing renews behind your back.
Which free option should you use?
| Your situation | Best free option |
|---|---|
| A 1-page form on paper | HonestFax - scan and send in one go, first page free |
| A form you need to send today, from your phone | HonestFax - no account, no computer, delivery status in the app |
| A 2-3 page PDF on a computer that isn't sensitive | A free fax website, if you don't mind its branding on the cover |
| A 10-page document | Probably not free anywhere - a HonestFax 10-page pack is $4.99 and never expires |
What free usually doesn't cover
Receiving a fax. To receive one you need a fax number of your own, and that usually costs money because the service rents a phone number for you - see how to get a fax number. In HonestFax, a 7-Day Pass is $9.99 once for a personal US or Canadian fax number for a week, and it never renews. See how to receive a fax on iPhone.
International faxes. Free fax websites usually stick to the US and Canada. HonestFax also sends to the UK, Germany and Japan - see how to send a fax internationally from iPhone.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fax from my iPhone for free? Yes, for short faxes. In HonestFax your first page is free, and free fax websites send a few pages at no cost. Longer faxes almost always cost something.
Is there a fax app with no subscription? Yes. HonestFax sells faxes per page instead of a weekly plan: you buy credits that never expire, and a subscription is only an option if you fax every week.
Is a free fax safe for tax or medical forms? Check before you upload. Read the privacy terms of any free fax website, and keep personal documents to a service you trust. A fax goes to a phone number, so double-check the number too.
Can I receive a fax on my iPhone for free? Not with HonestFax - receiving needs a fax number of your own, which starts with the 7-Day Pass. Whatever service you use, check what you'll pay before you hand out a number.
