Free fax online: what's really free in 2026
Can you send a free fax online? Yes - several websites send a short fax for free, usually up to 3 pages to the US and Canada, and a few online fax services have a small free allowance. Every free fax online comes with a limit: pages per fax, faxes per day, branding on the cover page, or an account to open.
Here is what each free option really gives you, checked on each service's own website.
Full disclosure: I make HonestFax, the first option below. The limits of other services are the ones they publish on their own websites.
Free fax online services compared
| Free option | Free limit | What you give or accept |
|---|---|---|
| No account, no branding HonestFax (iPhone app) | Your first page free on a new device; sends to the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and Japan | Nothing to sign up for; after the free page you pay per fax, with no subscription |
| FaxZero | Up to 3 pages plus a cover page, 5 free faxes a day, to the US and Canada | Your email address; FaxZero branding on the cover page |
| GotFreeFax | Up to 3 pages per fax, 2 free faxes a day, to the US and Canada | Your name and details in a web form |
| Fax.Plus free plan | 10 pages in total, not per month | An account |
All of them send a real fax: the office on the other side gets the pages on its fax machine or fax inbox like any other fax.
How to send a free fax online with HonestFax
If the pages are on paper, or the file is on your phone, the fastest free fax is from your iPhone. The camera is the scanner, so there's no file to prepare:
- Install HonestFax and open the New Fax tab. No account, no email address.
- Add the page. Scan it with the camera, pick a photo, or attach a PDF from Files.
- Type the fax number and check the destination.
- Check the price above the Send fax button. On a new device your first page is free, so a one-page fax shows $0.
- Send and watch it go through until it says Delivered. The Sent tab keeps the exact page that went out.
After the free page, a fax of up to 3 pages is $2.99, 10 pages are $4.99 and 30 pages are $9.99, and the pages never expire. If a fax can't be delivered, the credits come back automatically. The full walkthrough is in how to send a fax from your iPhone.
How free fax websites work
A free fax website works in any browser, on a computer or a phone:
- Fill in your details - name, and on most sites your email address, where the confirmation is sent.
- Fill in the recipient's name and fax number.
- Attach the file. FaxZero takes DOC, DOCX and PDF files; GotFreeFax takes PDF, DOC and JPG files.
- Type the cover page text if you want one.
- Send, then check your email for the result.
The free fax usually goes out after the paid ones. FaxZero lists "priority delivery vs. free faxes" as a reason to pay, so a free fax can take longer to arrive.
If the paper isn't scanned yet, you need a scanner or a scanning app first - how to scan documents for a fax covers what makes a scan readable on the other side.
The limits that matter
- Pages. 3 pages per fax is the common free limit. A 4-page form plus a cover page is already a paid fax on most free sites.
- Faxes per day. FaxZero allows 5 free faxes a day, GotFreeFax 2.
- Branding. FaxZero puts its branding on the free cover page; its $3.29 fax (up to 25 pages) removes it.
- Destinations. FaxZero's free fax goes to the US and Canada. International faxes cost money almost everywhere - see how to send a fax internationally from your iPhone.
- Privacy. You upload the document to a website you may never have heard of. Read its privacy terms before you send tax, medical or ID documents.
Can you receive a fax online for free?
Rarely. Receiving needs a fax number, and a fax number costs the service money every month, so free plans are almost always for sending only. In HonestFax, receiving starts with the 7-Day Pass: a personal US or Canadian fax number for 7 days for $9.99, which never renews. How to get a fax number compares the ways to get one.
Which free option should you use?
| Your situation | Best free option |
|---|---|
| One page on paper, iPhone in hand | HonestFax - scan and send, the first page is free |
| A one-page PDF on your phone | HonestFax - attach it from Files, no account |
| 2-3 pages, non-sensitive, on a computer | A free fax website |
| A few faxes over a few weeks | A free plan with a page allowance |
| More than 3 pages | A paid fax - see how much does it cost to send a fax |

Frequently asked questions
Is there a truly free fax online? Yes, for short faxes. Free fax websites send up to 3 pages without payment, and HonestFax sends your first page free on a new iPhone. Longer faxes cost money almost everywhere.
Do free fax sites need a credit card? The free tiers listed here don't. FaxZero says no credit card is required for its free fax.
Can I send a free fax online without an email address? Most free fax websites ask for one, to send the confirmation. HonestFax doesn't ask for an email address - the delivery status shows in the app.
Is a free online fax secure? It's as safe as the website you upload to. For personal documents, use a service whose privacy terms you've read, and keep the delivery confirmation.
