Free fax app: which ones are really free (iPhone and Android)

How to send a free fax with the HonestFax app
The hard part of faxing from a phone isn't the sending - it's turning paper into a fax-ready file. HonestFax does the scanning and the sending in one app, and on a new device your first page is on us.

The three kinds of "free" in a fax app
A fax app that says "free" in the App Store or Google Play can mean one of three things once you try to send a fax:
- A free first page or first fax. You send something real at no cost, then pay for the next one. HonestFax works this way: your first page is free.

- A free download, paid faxes. Nothing is free to send; the app is only free to install. Not a problem if the price is clear before you scan.
How to check a fax app before you install it
You can see what a "free" fax app will charge before you download it, right on its App Store page:
- Open the app's page in the App Store and scroll down to the Information section.
- Tap In-App Purchases. It lists every price the app sells, by name. Items with "week", "weekly" or "unlimited" in the name are usually subscriptions; items named after pages or faxes are usually one-time purchases.
- Read the end of the description. Apps with subscriptions usually say there that they renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the period.
