Social Security fax number: how to find your local office's fax
There is no single Social Security fax number for the whole country. Each Social Security office has its own fax number, and ssa.gov shows it on that office's page in the Field Office Locator, under "Contact numbers", next to the phone number.
SSA's forms page says you can fax or mail any paper form to your local office, unless the form itself gives other instructions. This guide shows how to find the right office's fax number on ssa.gov, what you can't send by fax, and how to fax the pages from your phone if you don't have a fax machine.
How to find the Social Security fax number for your office
- Go to ssa.gov/locator - the official SSA Field Office Locator.
- Type your ZIP code, city or address in "Find an office near you" and tap Search.
- In the results, pick the office that serves you and tap Office information.
- Under Contact numbers, the page lists Phone and Fax. The fax number is the one to send your forms to. The same page shows the office hours, the mailing address and whether the office has a drop box.
When we checked a San Antonio, Texas office on October 28, 2026, its page listed the national phone line, 1-800-772-1213, and a separate toll-free fax number for that office. That is the usual pattern: the phone number is shared, the fax number belongs to the office. So always copy the fax number from your own office's page, not from a list on another site.
Card Centers are different. Some results are marked Card Center. SSA says those offices only offer express card services and should not be contacted for benefits applications or appeals - pick a regular field office for those.
If you got a letter from SSA, check it first. A letter that asks you to send something usually says where to send it, and that beats any number you look up. Our fax number lookup guide explains where fax numbers are usually printed when you can't find one.
What you can and can't fax to Social Security
- Paper forms - yes, usually. SSA's forms page: you can fax or mail any paper form to your local office, unless the form says otherwise. Read the form's own instructions before you send.
- Proof documents for a Social Security card - no. For a new or replacement card, SSA says you must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them, and that it cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies. A fax is a copy, so a birth certificate or passport can't be faxed for a card.
- Disability hearings. If your case is at a hearing office, use the contact details on your hearing notice or in SSA's Hearing Office Locator, not the field office fax.
Check these before you fax
- Put your details on a cover sheet. Your full name, your Social Security number, a phone number, what you are sending and the page count. Our cover sheet guide shows a clean layout, or make one with the free cover sheet maker.
- Sign before you scan. A form that needs a signature should be signed on paper first, then scanned.
- Keep the pages readable. Dates, small print and checkboxes are what gets lost in a dark scan - see how to scan documents for a fax.
- Call if it's urgent. Office fax lines can be busy. If you are close to a deadline, call the office at 1-800-772-1213 to confirm it arrived.
How to fax Social Security from your iPhone
You don't need a fax machine or a trip to a print shop. With HonestFax:
- Install HonestFax and open the New Fax tab. No account, no email address.
- Add a cover page with your name, phone number and a short note on what the pages are.
- Scan the signed form with the camera, or add the PDF from Files.
- Choose United States and enter the fax number from your office's page on ssa.gov.
- The price shows on screen before you send - each page is 1 credit. If the line is busy, the app retries for about 30 minutes, and if the fax still fails, the credits come back automatically.
- When it says Delivered, the office's fax machine accepted every page. Keep that record with the time and page count.

Faxing vs. other ways to reach SSA
Many Social Security tasks can be done online with a my Social Security account, and a field office with a drop box lets you leave paper documents in person. Faxing makes sense when you have a paper form ready, the office asked you to fax it, or you can't get to the office. For other agencies, see our IRS fax numbers by form and the VA fax number guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Social Security fax number? There isn't one national number. Each field office has its own fax number, listed on its page in the ssa.gov Field Office Locator under "Contact numbers".
Is 1-800-772-1213 a fax number? No. 1-800-772-1213 is SSA's national phone line. The fax number is a different number shown on your office's page.
Can I fax my birth certificate to Social Security? Not for a Social Security card. SSA needs original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency, and it does not accept photocopies.
How do I know Social Security got my fax? A delivered fax means the office's machine accepted every page, at a time you can show. Processing comes later, so call the office if you don't hear back. More in how to confirm a fax was received.
