IRS fax numbers by form (SS-4, 2848, 8821)
The IRS accepts several forms by fax, and each form goes to a different number. Faxing to the wrong one usually means weeks of waiting before someone sends it back. This page lists the numbers from the IRS's own instructions, with the date we last checked them.
Checked on October 16, 2026 against the Instructions for Form SS-4 (Rev. December 2025) and the Instructions for Forms 2848 and 8821 (pages updated April 30, 2026). The IRS says these numbers can change without notice. Open the linked instructions on the day you send.
Form SS-4: apply for an EIN
Faxed applications get the EIN back by fax, generally within 4 business days. Applicants in the US can also apply online and get the number immediately. Full walkthrough: how to fax Form SS-4.

- If you checked the box on line 4 (a specific use not recorded on the CAF), send the form to the IRS office handling that matter instead.
- If you signed electronically, you must submit online, not by fax. The IRS also offers online submission for paper-signed forms through a Secure Access account.

Other IRS forms
The IRS takes more forms by fax than these three - Form 2553 (S corporation election), Form 4506-T (tax transcripts), Form 14039 (identity theft) and others. Search them all, filtered by your state, in our IRS fax number finder.
Many IRS letters and notices also give their own fax number for your reply. When a letter lists a fax number, use that one, not a general number from the internet. If your fax keeps failing or saying busy, see fax to IRS not going through.
