VA fax number for claims, evidence and medical records

The VA fax number for disability compensation claims and evidence is 844-531-7818 (toll free), the Claims Intake Center in Janesville, Wisconsin. From outside the US, VA lists 248-524-4260. Pension and fiduciary mail goes to different intake centers with their own fax numbers, and medical records requests go to your own VA facility, not to Janesville.

This guide lists the numbers VA publishes itself, which one fits which document, and how to send it from your phone if you don't have a fax machine.

Which VA fax number to use

VA sorts incoming mail and faxes by benefit type. Send each document to the intake center for the benefit it is about:

Benefit Intake center Fax
Disability compensation (and loan guaranty) Claims / Compensation Intake Center, PO Box 4444, Janesville, WI 53547-4444 844-531-7818
Disability compensation, sending from outside the US Same center 248-524-4260
Pension and survivors benefits Pension Intake Center, PO Box 5365, Janesville, WI 53547-5365 844-655-1604
Fiduciary Fiduciary Intake Center, PO Box 5211, Janesville, WI 53547 888-581-5826

The compensation numbers come from VA's "Mailing Address for Disability Compensation Claims" page. The pension and fiduciary numbers are printed in VA's own address table in the instructions of VA Form 20-0995 (Supplemental Claim). VA's phone line for all three is 1-800-827-1000.

Insurance, cemetery and Veteran Readiness and Employment have their own Janesville mailing addresses in the same table, but VA lists no fax number for them there. Use mail or the online options for those.

VA medical records fax number

There is no single VA fax number for medical records. VA says to send the request form - VA Form 10-5345a, "Individuals' Request for a Copy of Their Own Health Information" - to the medical records office (also called the Release of Information office) at your VA health facility, by mail, by fax or in person.

To find that office's fax number, open your facility's page on va.gov, choose Access your health records under "Other services", and use the contact details listed there. If a number is hard to find, our fax number lookup guide shows where else fax numbers are usually printed - and the simplest check is still a call to the office.

Check these before you fax

  • Use the number for your benefit type. A pension document faxed to the compensation number has to be rerouted before anyone can work on it.
  • Put your details on the cover sheet. Your full name, your VA file number or Social Security number, a phone number, what you are sending and the page count. Our cover sheet guide shows a clean layout, or make one with the free cover sheet maker.
  • Label extra evidence. VA Form 20-10208, Document Evidence Submission, is VA's form for sending additional documents or evidence - it lets you tick what you are sending and whether VA asked for it.
  • Keep the pages readable. Signatures, dates and small print are what gets lost in a dark scan. See how to scan documents for a fax.

How to fax VA documents from your iPhone

You don't need a fax machine. With HonestFax:

  1. Install HonestFax and open the New Fax tab. No account, no email address.
  2. Add a cover page with your name, VA file number and phone number.
  3. Scan the signed pages with the camera, or add the PDF from Files.
  4. Choose United States and enter the VA fax number from the table above.
  5. Check the price on screen and send. If the line is busy, the app retries for about 30 minutes, and if the fax still fails, the credits come back automatically.
  6. When it says Delivered, VA's fax line accepted every page. Keep that record.

Faxing vs. uploading online

VA also takes compensation and pension evidence online: you can upload supporting documents on va.gov, or use QuickSubmit in AccessVA. Uploading is often the better choice if you already have a VA.gov account, because the document goes straight into your file. Faxing makes sense when the pages are on paper, when you don't have an account set up, or when a VA letter asked you to fax.
