Fax test - how to send a test fax (free test number)
To run a fax test, send a single page and check that it arrives readable and your fax shows Delivered. The quickest way is a fax app: in HonestFax on iPhone your first page on a new device is free, so you can send a one-page test to the real number, your own fax line or a public test line such as FaxToy (1-855-330-1239) for $0.
A test fax is worth the minute it takes before you send something that matters, like a tax form or a medical record. Here is how to run one, how to test a fax machine's sending and receiving, and what the result does and doesn't prove.
Fax test from an iPhone with HonestFax
| Way to test | What you get |
|---|---|
| Free first page HonestFax (iPhone app) | A one-page test to any number you choose in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany or Japan - private, with live status from dialing to Delivered |
| Public test line (FaxToy) | A place to send from a fax machine; the page you send is shown publicly on its website |
| Your own second fax number | Tests sending and receiving at once, if you have two lines |
- Install HonestFax from the App Store. No sign-up.
- Scan or pick one page and type the number - the real office, your own fax line, or the FaxToy number if your page is not private.
- Check the price above Send fax. On a new device your first page is free, so a one-page test shows $0. Where that free page isn't available, a new account can send one free test fax to HonestFax's own test line instead, so you can see the app work before you pay.
- Watch the status. The send screen shows each step - uploading, dialing, transmitting - then Delivered or Failed. The Sent tab keeps the status, and tapping a fax opens the exact pages that were transmitted.
After the first page, you pay per fax (a fax of up to 3 pages is $2.99) with no subscription. If a fax fails after all its retries, the credits come back automatically. Step-by-step help for the whole flow: how to fax from iPhone.
What a fax test checks
A fax is a phone call between two machines. A test tells you whether each piece of that call works:
- The line. Your machine or service can dial out and the call connects.
- The handshake. The two sides agree on a speed and settings.
- The pages. Every page crosses the line and the receiver accepts it.
- The quality. The page that comes out is straight and readable, not grey or cut off.
A test only proves the path to the number you tested. If your test line works but the real office's number doesn't, the problem is on their side or in the number - see why a fax fails for the usual reasons.
Where to send a test fax
To the real recipient
For an important fax, the best test is the real number. Send a one-page note ("Test - please confirm you received this") and call to ask if it came through clearly. Busy offices often have one shared line, so this also tells you whether their machine is on and has paper. With HonestFax's free first page, this test costs nothing.
To a public test line (FaxToy)
FaxToy is a long-running public fax line that posts the pages it receives on its website. Its site lists two numbers: 1-855-330-1239 (toll free in the US) and 1-213-294-2943 (Los Angeles). It's handy for testing a fax machine, since you can see the page that arrived.
- Make a test page with nothing private on it. A line of text and today's date is enough. FaxToy shows received pages publicly at faxtoy.net, so never send a real form, a signature or anything with your name or account numbers.
- Send one page, no cover sheet. FaxToy says to send single-page documents without a cover sheet; if you send more than one page, only the last one appears.
- Fax it to 1-855-330-1239.
- Check faxtoy.net. The site says pages should appear within a couple of minutes. If your page is straight and readable, your sending side works.
To your own second number
If you have two fax numbers - an office machine and a fax app, for example - fax one to the other. This tests both directions at once and keeps the page private.
How to test receiving a fax
To check that your own fax number or machine can receive:
- Make sure the line is ready. A machine needs to be on, connected and set to answer; a fax app or online service needs an active number.
- Fax your number from somewhere else - HonestFax on your iPhone (the first page is free), an online fax service or a friend's machine.
- Check the result. The page should print on your machine or appear in your fax inbox within a few minutes.
If nothing arrives, look at the sender's status. Delivered means the call reached something that accepted the pages; a busy signal or no answer points at your line. For getting a fax number on your phone, see how to receive a fax on iPhone.
What the result means
- Delivered: the receiving machine or service accepted every page. It doesn't mean a person has read it. How to confirm a fax was received covers the proof you can keep.
- Retrying or busy: the line didn't answer. A fax service tries again on its own; in HonestFax that goes on for about 30 minutes before a fax is marked Failed.
- Failed: the call never completed, often a wrong number, a voice line or a machine that is off.
- Delivered but hard to read: the page went through, but the scan was too dark or faint. How to scan documents for a fax shows how to get a clean page.
A test that goes through in a minute or two is normal; see how long a fax takes if yours is slower.
